With regard to allegations of sexual abuse of children, relatively new procedures require that an accused priest be immediately suspended while an inquiry takes place followed, where appropriate, by a report to civil authorities. When it comes to the vast multitude of older cases, though, laicized clergy have simply dropped out of sight … and this is reprehensible.
This petition to Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, President of the United States Council of Catholic Bishops, urges that whenever a fallen priest is laicized or “defrocked” following “credible allegations” of child sex abuse, law enforcement and school districts be notified in the community where that individual now resides. And, as the petition makes clear, this protocol must apply to ALL failed religious, both recent and past.
